Ask an Expert:

“When can I start my indoor seeds?”

After the season of “garden catalog dreaming” passes many of us get anxious to get going on some planting. Believe me the farmer in me looks so forward to that first opportunity to get my hands in the dirt but that time is a couple months away yet. When white, grey and brown colors predominate our outdoors, starting some seeds is a great economical way to get started and see some green activity indoors. One of the most common mistakes and one I made in my early years as a gardener is to start seeds too early and end up with lanky spindly plants when it finally comes time to plant out. Best rule of thumb is to look at the date on the seed package for planting out and count backwards six weeks. For most plants in our Zone 4 that means starting to plant seeds the end of March.
